MSU must reveal names of student-athletes named in police reports

The ESPN network requested the names under Michigan’s Freedom of Information Act for a series on whether college athletes suspected of crimes are given preferential treatment. MSU supplied redacted campus police reports, but refused to release the names of 300 student-athletes who were not formally charged. ESPN sued, and MSU lost in the state Court of Appeals, which said it’s a matter of legitimate public concern. With one dissenting vote, the Michigan Supreme Court let that decision stand. MSU says it will hand over the names. reconsider its decision.
