Traverse City hopes to be 100% renewable by 2020

file000917541408By 2020 Traverse City hopes to run on 100% renewable energy.

The City Commission passed a resolution last month to move the city towards completely renewable fuels.

City officials say much of the move to renewable energy will be achieved by purchasing greener energies through its utility, Traverse City Light and Power.

Jim Carruthers is the Mayor of Traverse City. He said the cost of wind, solar, geothermal and landfill gas has fallen, making the 2020 goal feasible.

“I think it’s a good move and I think most people support it. Our city commission supported it unanimously, and our power company is interested in being involved, all of the various environmental groups that have been networking with us are very happy that this has happened.”

Carruthers said in addition to purchasing energy from renewable sources the Traverse City will work on making its buildings more energy efficient.

He said he hopes other communities work towards similar green goals.
