Saginaw Valley earns diversity award

svsuSaginaw Valley State University has been recognized a Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award.

SVSU was one of 56 Universities given the award by INSIGHT into Diversity Magazine.

The HEED award recognizes colleges and universities that show special initiatives towards diversity and inclusion.

Mamie Thorns, SVSUs Special Assistant to the President for Diversity Programs, said the University is making great strides but there is still room for improvement, “We continue to move towards a deeper practice of diversity and inclusion and a foundational pillow going forward.”

The award specifically mentions the leadership of University President Eric Gilbertson, who has been making diversity a priority since he started at SVSU in 1989.

The HEED award is based the demographics of the university and the services it provides based on gender, race, ethnicity, veteran status, sexual orientation and disability.
