Gov. Snyder signs bill to modify school safety drill requirements

Governor Rick Snyder has approved a bill modifying school safety drill requirements.

House Bill 4713 requires K-12 schools to hold a minimum of five fire drills per year – three must be held before December 1 of each year.

The bill also requires K-12 schools to hold one of its two required tornado drills in March.

The legislation also requires one of the three required “lockdown” drills to be conducted during a lunch or recess period.

Schools will now have to post documentation on its websites proving that required safety drills were conducted.

The bill also requires the governing body of a school to adopt and implement a cardiac emergency response plan.

The new requirements take effect this summer.
