MidMichigan Medical Center in Midland will now be better suited to handle trauma cases with its recently announced trauma center verification.
The process of earning such a designation has involved evaluation of the hospital’s efforts over the past eighteen months.
MidMichigan Medical Center has now been verified a level 2 trauma center by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons, or ACS.
Tom Wood is Trauma program manager at the MidMichigan Medical center.
“The verification is a really a reflection of the work we’ve already been doing and what it means is when we put the pieces in place to provide this trauma care we really expanded our resources to address and provide the best level of care. We focused on not only decreasing the amount of death that occurs from trauma but our goal is to get people back to their baseline function before they had their event.”
Wood said it’s very difficult to meet the more than 200 ACS standards to become a verified trauma center.
He says people should be aware that the trauma center will be focused on a higher level of trauma care. And he noted that the MidMichigan Health System affiliate hospital in Gratiot County is currently working toward verification as a Level 3 Trauma Center.
