A dam failure in extreme southwestern Roscommon County has prompted a flash flood warning and road closures throughout the area.
The Wraco Lodge Dam along Wolf Creek failed around noon Tuesday. According to emergency management officials, high waters are now moving downstream towards Old 27 and US-127. Water was reported to be only a few inches away from the bottom of the US-127 bridge.
Officials say residents downstream from the Wraco Lodge Dam should prepare immediately for flood waters. Drivers should also use extreme caution on US-127 between mile markers 185 and 186, as flood waters may cover the roadway.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police are on their way to survey flood waters in the area.
The Flash Flood Warning covers Town Line Creek, Wolf Creek and the Muskegon River in Roscommon County.
Closed roads include:
- Old 27 from the Clare County line to Snowbowl Road
- County Road 402 (Canoe Camp Road) from Paddle Trail southward
- Wraco Road and Rollway Road from Old 27 east to Reserve Road
- Newaygo Road and Townline Road from Wraco Road south to Rollway Road
Drivers are reminded to not drive through flood waters. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely.
