One non-profit is offering a raffle prize that’s not for the faint of heart.
The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association raffle has a prize of a trip straight up – to the top of the Mackinac bridge; A 550 foot high view of the Straits of Mackinac.
Terry Pepper, the executive director of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association said, the raffle money will be used to restore the St. Helena Island Light Station and the Cheboygan River Front Range Light.
“ The St. Helena Island Light Station requires a brand new roof. We put one on 25 years ago but it needs replacing and that’s going to cost us around $35,000. And the foundation of the 1880 Cheboygan River Front Range Light is in bad shape, the building is in good shape but the foundation underneath it needs to be excavated and re tuck pointed and sealed to stop water infiltration.”
Pepper says the lighthouse keepers have already sold 2,400 tickets . They’re printing 2,000 more.
The raffle will be held on July 31 at the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association office in Mackinaw City.
