A conference next week will explore creating a network of recreational trails around the Great Lakes.
The Lake Michigan Water Trail Association is hosting the conference, and leading an effort to build and integrate sea kayaking and bicycle trails around the Great Lakes.
Dave Lemberg, an Associate Professor of Geography at Western Michigan University, said the point of the conference is to talk about the potential for developing a 7,000 mile loop route around all of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river.
“People from Ontario will be there to talk with us about how we can integrate the trails that we’re doing on our side of the lakes with the trails that they’re doing on their side of the lakes, “ he said.
The trails will be mapped, marked and integrated into a national system. The goal is get people from all over the country and world to come to Michigan’s world class recreation touring destination.
The conference will be held May 15-16 at Saugatuck Center for the Arts in Saugatuck.
