Bay County health officials are saying that a new, stronger affiliation with Saginaw Valley State University could help tackle chronic health concerns in the county.
Currently, SVSU nursing students gain clinical experience working with the Bay County Health Department. But under a new arrangement, five additional health departments would become involved in efforts to promote health and well being in Bay County.
Joel Strasz is a Health Officer with the Bay County Health Department.
He said, “It’s a good affiliation because it brings resources from both the University level and the community level together and we can effectively be able to improve the community’s health with some interesting and new programming.”
SVSU is equally excited about the affiliation agreement. Judith Ruland is dean of the university’s College of Health and Human Services. She said it will give students new opportunities to work in the community and gain valuable experience.
Both SVSU and the health department are expected to finalize the affiliation this month.
The Bay County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night giving their approval of the stronger affiliation.
