With school halls empty and summer in full swing, people and families are out enjoying vacations across Michigan.
Carlin Smith is President of the Petoskey Chamber of Commerce.
He said efforts like Pure Michigan have had a profound impact on increasing tourism for the state.
“All the economic indicators we have kind of point to another uptick in tourism, and we’ve seen that fairly steady since the 08’-09’ downturn. We did feel the effects of that, no doubt about it, but then we saw a growth the next year and the next year and I think we’re going to see even another uptick this year. So we’re moving in the right direction and I have every reason to believe that this is going to be a great summer tourism season for us in Petoskey.”
Smith said he has seen an increase in out-of-state license plates as well this summer, particularly this fourth of July weekend.
“I think one of the reasons people come up here for the fourth of July; it’s a little cooler, it’s a little more comfortable, but there’s always plenty going on and something to do. And the other nice thing is it’s kind of a collection of communities that are doing it so there’s something to do all around the bay.”
