Construction is finding its way to Mecosta County this weekend, but doesn’t plan on overstaying its welcome.

Northbound US-131 will close over 3 mile road beginning at 3pm this Saturday, August 9th until Thursday, August 14th.

The road will be closed to demolish and remove an old bridge, and have a new bridge slid in place using new bridge slide technology.

State Transportation officials said the new technology is becoming a common practice throughout the state.

John Richard is a spokesperson for MDOT’s grand region.

He said the new slide technology reduces the time frame of construction and saves motorists both time and money.

“Basically what happens is they’ll take the new bridge that was built next to the existing structure and they’ll demolish the old structure and then slide the new structure into place so instead of a four to five month detour, US-131 will only be only be detoured for about five to six days.”
