A historic lighthouse that has greeted generations of visitors to Mackinac Island is up for auction.
The hope is that the 66-year-old Round Island Passage Lighthouse will be purchased by a non-profit organization that is dedicated to preserving the light.
The light is situated between Mackinac Island and Round Island in Lake Huron.
Terry Pepper, Executive Director of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, said, unfortunately, there’s not much money allocated to lighthouse upkeep. He said auctioning the lighthouse is a good solution.
“Because, then, you have a dedicated group of people who are willing to put their time, effort and money into restoring and maintaining the structure,” he said.
Pepper said the lighthouse is fully functional, and that because of automation technology, no actual lighthouse keepers are needed.
Currently, the most recent bid is for $20,000.
