November general elections are just around the corner. In an effort to get younger people registered to vote, a mobile voter registration office, known as “ExpressSOS,” is hitting college campuses across Michigan.
State officials said more than 20 elections were won or lost by less than 100 votes in 2012.
Ruth Johnson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, said it’s a responsibility of Americans to vote, especially for citizens just obtaining that right.
“Young people tend to be a subgroup that doesn’t always realize how important it is and don’t always take that responsibility,” she said. “I think it’s a huge change when you’re 18 years old, one day you’re a kid and today you’re an adult, and part of being an adult is having your voice heard; it’s being a part of your process.”
The registration deadline to vote is October 6 for the November 4 general election.
ExpressSOS will be visit the following campus:
- Saginaw Valley State University, September 10
- Central Michigan University, September 30
- Ferris State University, October 1
- Alma College, October. 2
