State lawmakers and the public could get their first look tomorrow (Thu.) at legislation to overhaul the Detroit Public Schools. The district faces hundreds of millions of dollars of debt, and a possible default if something isn’t done.
Snyder outlined his plan in Detroit on Monday. The goal is to rescue Detroit Public Schools (DPS) from crushing debt and dismal academic results.
The proposal would split the district in two. A new body would oversee education and normal school operations. The old DPS would exist only to collect taxes and pay down debt. Continue reading
The former Buena Vista School District’s remaining debt is one step closer to being paid off.
The Saginaw County district was dissolved back in 2013, but still has a debt totaling $660,000.
Now-dissolved Buena Vista School District has a large debt from its dissolution process. Its remaining debt could be paid off in the near future under legislation approved by the state Senate, this week.
Money is something many people wish they had more of.
