Deadly animal disease on the rise in Charlevoix County

Wildlife officials are reporting an increase in Distemper among wild animals in Charlevoix County. Distemper is an incurable viral disease that affects the intestinal and respiratory tracts.

Animal control officials say there have been more than 30 cases of Distemper in raccoons, foxes and coyotes since June – a dramatic increase from previous years. Continue reading

Northern Michigan beef herd tests positive for Bovine TB

For the second time this year, a northern Michigan beef herd has tested positive for Bovine Tuberculosis disease.MDARD

The small herd in Alcona County was found to be infected with Bovine TB during routine testing by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD.)

The herd is located in a part of Michigan where Bovine TB is common among wild deer. The deer in turn spread it to captive animal herds. Continue reading

One network is called “My Health Teams”. It’s a peer to peer social health network that works to connect people with chronic illnesses.
