Judge hears arguments over recognizing 300 same-sex marriages in Michigan

Some 300 same-sex couples in Michigan are waiting to hear whether a federal judge will force the state to recognize their marriages. Judge Mark Goldsmith heard arguments on Thursday from attorneys for the state and for the same-sex couples.

A federal judge in Detroit will hear arguments tomorrow (Thu.) on whether Michigan must recognize 300 marriages of same-sex couples.

6th Circuit combines hearing on marriage cases

Challenges to same-sex marriage bans in Michigan and three other states will be argued in a single afternoon later this summer before the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati. The Michigan arguments are being combined with cases out of Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette has filed a brief with a federal appeals court seeking to overturn a judge’s decision to strike down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. In the filing, Schuette says the case is about voters’ rights, not the right of same-sex couples to get married. Continue reading

ALCU files suit to force Michigan to recognize same-sex marriages



The ACLU of Michigan is suing the state to force it to recognize the marriages of about 300 same-sex couples who got married last month. Michigan Public Radio’s Jake Neher caught up with one of the eight couples named as plaintiffs in that lawsuit… and their 13 children.
