State lawmakers have begun hearings on bipartisan bills meant to help 17 year olds avoid serving time in adult prisons.

Asian carp were found within 80 miles of the Great Lakes, roughly 60 miles closer than they were at the beginning of this year.
Two juvenile Silver Carp, a type of Asian carp, were found in the Illinois River. The fish have been steadily making their way north over the last several years.

Michigan’s juvenile justice system will be getting an overhaul in an effort to improve outcomes for youths.
Michigan was one of four states selected by the National Governors Association to examine ways to improve the juvenile justice system.
It’s supposed to be a safe place to learn and grow, but some youth advocates say in Michigan there is a growing tendency to criminalize rather than educate children. The advocates are working to fight what they call the “school-to-prison pipeline.”
