State seeking bidders for Mackinac pipeline study

1280px-Mackinac_BridgeThe state has extended the deadline for companies to bid on work studying of Enbridge Line 5. That’s the oil and gas pipeline that runs under the Mackinac straits.

The study will include a risk analysis of the 60-year-old pipeline, and alternatives to shipping oil and gas beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

Two week multi-branch military training operation occurring in Northern Michigan

National Guard LogoDuring the first two weeks of April over a thousand soldiers from various military branches will descend on Northern Michigan for a joint training exercise.

Next month the Coast Guard will be working with Enbridge to test their oil spill response plan, should line 5 ever rupture.

Steve Keck, a Coast Guard Contingency Preparedness Specialist, said a simulation of this size takes about a year to plan.

Pipeline task force releases recommendations

The Michigan Petroleum Pipeline Task Force has released its recommendations for Line 5 underneath the Straits of Mackinac.

No heavy tar-sands oil will be allowed pass under the Great Lakes per the task force’s first round of recommendations.
