A new 10-million dollar science, technology, engineering and math institute is coming to Midland.

The facility will be funded by Michigan State University, Dow Chemical Company, The Herber H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, and the Charles J. Strosacker foundations.

MSU wins reprieve of court order to release student-athlete names

MSU brick entrance sign on Kalamazoo Street.Michigan State University has won a temporary reprieve from a court order to release the names of 301 student-athletes listed as suspects in police reports. Otherwise, the deadline to release the names was Friday.

The sports network ESPN is seeking the names under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act. It’s part of an investigation into whether colleges treat student-athletes suspected of crimes differently than other students. MSU gave ESPN police reports, but with the names blacked out. MSU says it should not have to release the names unless the students are formally charged with a crime. ESPN says it can’t do the story without the names and it’s a matter of legitimate public interest. Continue reading
