Final debate highlights candidates in 1st congressional district

file2941307482066The first Congressional District is one of the most competitive races in the state. Incumbent Republican Dan Benishek is retiring. That leaves a race between retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant general Republican Jack Bergman, former head of the Michigan Democratic party Lon Johnson, Green Party Candidate Ellis Boal, and Libertarian Diane Bostow.

On Friday Lake Superior State University in Sault Sainte Marie hosted a debate between Bergman, Johnson, and Boal.

‘Security Clearance’ comment questioned at 1st congressional district debate

IMG_8730At the final debate between congressional candidates in Michigan’s first district, a comment on security clearance became a sticking point between Republican Jack Bergman and Democrat Lon Johnson.

Johnson alleged Bergman used security clearance for political expediency while Bergman said it helps him make a point.

Schuette files lawsuit to shut down abortion clinic

billlschuetteMichigan Attorney Bill Schuette has filed a lawsuit to shut down an abortion provider in Detroit. The anti-abortion Republican filed the lawsuit against the Summit Women’s Center in Detroit. The legal action says it violates a state law that requires abortion clinics to have a licensed doctor in charge of the facility.

Lawmakers try again to add criminal penalties for coercing abortion

Republican state lawmakers have been trying to add the penalties for years. Supporters say prosecutors should have them as a tool to crack down on domestic abuse.

Gamrat files for her old House seat

GAMRAT_0115_DSC4054Expelled state Representative Cindy Gamrat has filed to run for her old House seat.

Gamrat joins a Republican field that’s already five people and is expected to attract more. No Democrats have filed to run in the predominantly GOP seat in Allegan County.

Gamrat was removed last week by a two-thirds vote of the House over her role in a sex-and-cover-up scandal. She says that decision was not fair to her voters.
