Lisa Brown to be Mark Schauer’s running mate

Democrat Mark Schauer will name Oakland County Clerk Lisa Brown as his running mate in his campaign for governor. An announcement is planned in Oakland County.

Lisa Brown comes from vote-rich Oakland County, fiercely contested territory for Republicans and Democrats. She’s a prodigious fundraiser. She is also a favorite of progressives. She challenged Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage in court. And she opened county offices the Saturday after a judge struck down Michigan’s ban to allow hundreds of gay and lesbian couples to get married. As a state legislator, she was a fierce defender of abortion rights.

Multiple Democratic Party sources confirmed Brown is the choice, but there is no official word from the Schauer campaign. Under the Michigan Constitution, the choice for lieutenant governor candidate will have to be ratified by a party convention following the August primary. Schauer is challenging Republican Governor Rick Snyder.

But there’s a question here in Michigan that remains – what happens to more than 350 juvenile lifers here who were sent to prison before the decision. The state Supreme Court will hear arguments Thursday on that question.

The state’s defense of Michigan’s same-sex marriage ban got off to a rocky start Monday.

Federal Judge Bernard Friedman tossed out the state’s first witness in the case. He said Yale law student Sherif Girgis did not qualify as an expert witness.
