Following a meeting Thursday evening, a series of oil and gas leases along the Au Sable River have been approved as non development leases
That lease does not allow the use of surface ground for oil and gas exploration or development.
Officials say the corridor in question encompasses an area east of Grayling.
DNR Director Keith Creagh said the leases present an opportunity to protect the area’s valuable surface features.
He said the leases protect Michigan citizens against the loss of revenue if publicly owned minerals are removed without a lease in place.
Creagh said his decision to approve the leases came after -quote- “careful consideration” of comments submitted by various conservation groups and Michigan residents.
