Michigan’s historic ship “Welcome” is finding a new home in Emmet County

ship 11-27-13A piece of Michigan’s history is being given a new home in Emmet county. The 18th century replica-ship, “Welcome” is in the process of finding a new home.

The Welcome was built in the late 1970s by the state. For the last two decades it’s been moored in Traverse City.

Now the Maritime Heritage Alliance, which owns “Welcome”, is in talks with Emmet county officials to give the ship a new home; perhaps at a museum at the Headlands Dark Sky park in Mackinaw City.

Rod Jones is the President of the Maritime Heritage Alliance. He said he’s glad the Emmet county agreement is moving forward, because the other alternatives weren’t very pleasant, “We tried to find other groups to take it, and we didn’t. And then we had actually decided to look towards sinking her as a dive attraction in the bay.”

Jones says the Maritime Heritage Alliance has a meeting scheduled with Emmet county officials Monday to iron out the details of the transfer.
