State Legislature starts clock on abortion, Medicaid, and other bills taking effect

The state Legislature officially ended its 2013 session Friday after taking its last votes of the year Thursday night. That means some major laws passed this year will take effect in 90 days.

Those include legislation expanding Medicaid to hundreds of thousands of low-income Michiganders, and a new law banning abortion coverage in standard health plans.

Veto-proof abortion insurance ban adopted by Legislature

file000192352681The Michigan House and Senate have approved a veto-proof law that will require consumers to buy separate policies for abortion coverage. The question was put to the Legislature by a petition drive after Governor Snyder vetoed a similar measure last year because there were no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. The new law will take effect early next year.
