Alpena County has received 850-thousand dollars for a dredging project on the Thunder Bay River.
The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers awarded the grant to fund a dredging project in the Alpena Harbor, which flows into Thunder Bay.
Melissa Bossman is with the Detroit district of the Corp.
“It’s being dredged for navigation purposes, the harbor must be dredged on a 5 to 10 year cycle to ensure commercial traffic can get in and out of the harbor.”
Bossman said the Alpena Harbor was last dredged in 2007.
“It’ll have long term beneficial effects on the commercial and recreational navigation interests of the harbor. It’ll also provide a source of material available for re-use.”
The project is slated to begin in the fall, and will take two weeks to complete.
