New app will help get information to Flint residents

MALE HAND HOLDING SMARTPHONE 2If you’re looking for information in the Flint water crisis, there’s an app for that. It’s called Empower Flint.

The app is designed to help Flint residents get access to critical information about the evolving crisis.

Brian Winn is an associate professor at Michigan State University, and one of the creators of the app. He said access to information was a clear problem for Flint residents.

“Yeah we talked a lot with Central Michigan 2-1-1, that’s the number people could call in Flint to get help and get their questions answered. In conversations with them we identified basically this really is needed. They’ve got websites and the information is out there but people weren’t able to access it in an easy fashion.”

Winn said they also worked with Flint residents to figure out how best to meet their needs.

“We also found that a lot of residents don’t have access to desktop computers but a lot of the information is on traditional websites that aren’t that mobile friendly. Most of them do have smart phones so we knew a mobile app format was the most appropriate to present this.”

The app is available for both iPhone and Android. Winn says it will be maintained as long as residents still need it.
