Antibiotic use in food animals will be the focus of a discussion in Mt Pleasant

DSC_0751Antibiotics are used to prevent and treat illnesses in farm animals.

Officials agree it’s important to keep the animals we eat healthy. The question is are antibiotics and vaccines overused.

Madonna Benjamin is an assistant professor at Michigan State University and a swine veterinarian.

“In order to reduce the likelihood of resistance to an antibiotic, the one health concept is to really drill down and focus and use antibiotics as judiciously or as prudently as possible.

Benjamin says increasing veterinary oversight of animals would be an effective way to better monitor and animal health.
