A one point nine million dollar repair project to update and repair Charlevoix’s drawbridge is scheduled to being the day after Christmas. And the disruption to traffic will be substantial. The city is planning a public meeting to talk to residents.
The repair project is expected to reduce the bridge to one lane of traffic in each direction.
Additionally, for twelve consecutive nights the bridge will be closed entirely for six-hours, from 11pm to 5am. The detour will be 67 miles long.
James Lake is with the Michigan Department of Transportation. He said MDOT has met with emergency services to plan for the closings.
“Local emergency services have been planning to stage personnel on either side of the bridge so they can respond to emergencies even during those closures.”
Lake said the project will include electrical and mechanical upgrades, as well as street repair.
A meeting is scheduled at the Charlevoix City Hall, Wednesday at 4:00pm for anyone interested in learning more.
