Ballot selfies were briefly legal before the November election before being shot down by the 6th circuit court of appeals.
Republican Representative Steve Johnson is the bill sponsor. He said concerns that the practice could be used to purchase votes are largely unfounded.
“Honestly with the technology of smart phones you could probably take a picture and no one would even notice, so it’s really just the law abiding that are being punished. At the end of the day I would rather prioritize free speech over security.”
Representative Johnson said the bill has bipartisan support.
He said he is hopeful the measure will move quickly through the legislature.
