A Facebook post prompted the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to be inundated with reports of wolf poaching in Clare county.

Michigan conservation officers use robotic decoy animals to catch poachers

Hunters often use decoy animals to lure in prey. In Michigan, DNR officers have turned the tables; they use decoy animals to catch poachers.

Conservation officers use robo-deer and other fake animals to catch poachers in the act.

Officers say they frequently get complaints of people hunting from their vehicles or trespassing in rural areas.

That’s when, they said, they break out the remote controlled robo-deer. The decoys have moveable heads, tails and sometimes legs. Continue reading

A Michigan organization is pushing for tougher poaching fines

Deer hunting season is wrapping up in much of the state, but one organization has another large mammal on its mind.

Officials with Michigan United Conservation Clubs said they are working on a resolution that would increase fines for elk poaching.

DNR officials say Michigan’s state elk population is around 900, that compares to millions of whitetail deer. Currently, elk poaching carries up to $2,500 in fines. Continue reading

Redhead duck poaching case is resolved

redhead ducksTwo Kawkawlin men are facing charges for poaching redhead ducks.

Conservation officials said the men have been sentenced with $4,000 each in restitution fines, $625 each in court fines and five days of jail time.

The two admitted to shooting 20 redhead ducks while hunting last month in Arenac county.

The bag limit for redhead ducks is two per hunter.

DNR is offering a reward in Montmorency County elk poaching cold-case

DNR officials are kicking off elk season by asking for the public’s help to track down a poacher.

The case happened last December in Montmorency County.

Debbie Munson Badini is a spokesperson for the DNR.
She said the head and antlers of an elk were taken as a trophy, but the rest of the animal was left behind. Continue reading
