Officers and state dispute whether protest turned into a riot at Kinross Correctional

The union that represents prison guards there says the state has played down the incident… which the union describes as a full blown riot. But the Department of Corrections disagrees.

FCC votes to cap prison and jail phone call rates

A federal proposal to cap prison and jail phone call rates could receive final approval next month.

Currently, Michigan inmates pay an average of 20 cents per minute for phone calls. Under the proposal, that would be nearly cut in half, to 11 cents per minute. Continue reading

Supporters of overhauling Michigan’s parole system are pushing back against Attorney General Bill Schuette’s claims about the bill.

Schuette says House Bill 4138 would compromise public safety by allowing violent criminals to be released from prison early.

Chippewa County prison dealing with 17 assaults in past week

At the Kinross Correctional Facility in Kincheloe, 17 assaults have taken place over the past week.

The Michigan Department of Corrections said the assaults stemmed from a July 20th fight, that led to a series of altercations throughout the week. Continue reading

Vermont wants to send inmates to Baldwin private prison

prison 11-26-13Vermont intends to move 319 high-security inmates to a privately run prison in Michigan. That would allow the GEO Group to re-open the facility in Baldwin that’s been closed since 2005, when Michigan scrapped its agreement with the company.

Audit finds problems with prisoner education programs in Michigan

prison 11-26-13Michigan prison officials need to do more to make sure inmates have access to education programs. That’s according to a new report from the state Auditor General’s office.

The audit shows the Michigan Department of Corrections failed to identify prisoners who qualify for federal assistance to take classes. And it says the department didn’t assess the programs to make sure they’re effective.
